Distance-Landscape: Football Field (Lois Patiño, Spain, 2011, 1 min)

Part of Galician filmmaker Patiño’s studies of observer and landscape, contemplating a friendly football match on earth’s loneliest pitch.

Children’s Game #19: Haram Football (Francis Alÿs, Iraq, 2017, 9 min)

Imaginational match in a time of forbidden football, dreamed up by kids in Mosul, Iraq, days after liberation in August 2017.

Breaktime (Abbas Kiarostami, Iran, 1972, 15 min)

In this early short from Kiarostami we see the Iranian master expanding his visual grammar, adding crane shots to an otherwise neo-realist inflected tale of a truant schoolboy, a soccerball, and a maze of Tehran streets.

Refait (Collectif Pied La Biche, France, 2009, 16 min)

The last fifteen minutes of the football match between France and Germany in 1982 in Seville. Shot by Pied la Biche in Villeurbanne, France, each scene reenacts with uncanny precision to align with the original players' positions and gestures, effectively relocating the game into the urban milieu, among devoted, distressed, and listless ‘players’.

Half Time

Forza Bastia (Jacques Tati and Sophie Tatischeff, 1978, France, 26 min)

Chronicler of human absurdity, Tati finds his perfect ‘match’ in a waterlogged European Cup final between the unlikely underdog Corsican team and the Netherlands's PSV Eindhoven. Shooting the game’s lead up in Bastia’s streets, Tati’s wistful gaze tracks the folly and fervor of the island fanbase. The Stade de Furiani becomes a stage for what will surely be one of the lesser expressions of ‘the beautiful game’.

San Siro (Yuri Ancarani, 2014, Italy, 26 min)

Anatomy of a soon-to-be-demolished stadium. Portrait of the backstage of one of football’s iconic venues, where television crews, line painters, law enforcement, pitch gardeners, and supporters prepare for the relentless ritual of football. Still life of la nebbia Milanese (eternal fog of Milan) parted by the arrival of the team bus.
