Mutable Memory houses works from Naomi Kasumi and Rachel Dorsey. Kasumi and Dorsey are each exploring ideas of lineage, storytelling, and the cyclical nature of the human experience through verse materials. From Kasumi’s books of encaustic teabags and leftover fragments to Dorsey’s drawings on mended and inherited patchwork fabrics—these contemporary works challenge the way we call on memory and stow away sentimentality. Further, they move to represent ways in which our emotions and personal experiences can be as mutable as the drawn line. With the inclusion of Dorsey’s new works installed with a distinct relation to domestic objects, living in conversation with an installation of bound works from Kasumi, both artists implore the viewer to pursue closer intimacy with memory and material by way of installation, color, and gesture.
